Detroit Isn't All Bad!

On Thursday in class we had our discussion of Jerry Herron's article on the city of Detroit. There were a few different view points of those in the class. There was the guy who kept saying we shouldn't try to clean Detroit up when events are taking place downtown. He said that it was deceiving to make people think the city is cleaner than it actually is. I feel the opposite. I don't think its wrong to clean up. I think it would be disrespectful to the events if we didn't clean up the city.
As far as the discussion about greektown, I feel that greektown is not guilty of destroying our history. So what if the Dodge brothers worked with Henry Ford in the building that now houses a restaurant. I'm not saying we should forget our history of being the Motor City, but its not like there aren't any reminders around today. Our history is all around us in plants that are still open today. Greektown is something that brings people who live in the greater Detroit area downtown. It is just one thing that helps to improve the city. We should not focus on the negative, but on the positive. Other steps in the right direction are such as the creating of the Hard Rock Cafe Detroit, and the ice rink downtown as well. If we want people to move to the Detroit area we need to provide more things to do. Right now some of the big casinos in the area are planning and designing hotels to be attached. This is another way of bringing more jobs to the area, and getting more people to spend time downtown. Detroit is slowly getting back on the right track and we just need to keep pressing forward.
